* PROPERTY TAX RATES SHOULD GO DOWN IN 2023
Per John Kulseth, the San Juan County Assessor: According to Washington State Law, all taxing districts, including San Juan County of course, are only allowed to increase their annual budgets by 1%, plus an allowance for new construction, which historically adds another 1-2%. (It used to be 6%, plus new construction, but was reduced to 1% in 2002). Therefore, according to the law, if property assessed values go substantially up, the property tax rate would go down, keeping the property tax increases correspondingly limited to the budget increases allowed. Mr. Kulseth stated in late 2022, “Property tax rates will likely go down next year because of the recent increases in San Juan County property values. If rates did not go down, taxing districts could potentially collect more than allowed.”
