The San Juan Preservation Trust

The oldest conservation land trust in Washington State, The San Juan Preservation Trust is a private, non-profit organization that enlists voluntary community support to permanently protect land and natural values in the islands. Founded 25 years ago by a group of visionary residents concerned about the future of the San Juans, The Preservation Trust has since protected over 9,500 acres and 21 miles of shoreline on 17 different islands. Conservation of privately-owned open space, forest, agricultural lands, habitat, wetlands and shoreline plays a critical role in achieving our cherished island landscapes and a way of life. The Preservation Trust’s approach is simple and permanent: They raise funds to acquire important island properties, or they work cooperatively with private island landowners to help them permanently protect the natural features on their own land. The Preservation Trust receives no governmental (tax) support for its operations; most of its funding comes from a private membership base of almost 1,500 caring families, individuals and businesses. The San Juan Preservation Trust and San Juan County Land Bank are increasingly working in partnership to leverage private and public dollars for critical protection projects in the islands.
